Grand Island Sports Boosters

Welcome to gisportsboosters.org

Some of us have made trips to other schools of about the same size as G.I. to see what types of sports facilities they have constructed during their latest projects.  For pictures of these facilities, click on the thumbprints below for a more detailed picture.  Click on the upper left of the larger pictures to leaf backwards through the pictures and the upper right to go forward.  Click on the lower right of the large pictures to close out of that school.  DON'T OUR ATHLETES DESERVE THE SAME TREATMENT?

We presented our plans to the school board over one year ago for a sports complex for the Grand Island Central School District.  We offered to sit down with the Board and discusss this plan, raise some of the money for the construction, and show how it could be self-sustaining.. Although the school board did not dismiss it out of hand, it was obvious that any suggestions of this type would just get in the way of their overall plan,  We were led to believe that we were making headway on the project, but we had great difficulty just to be able to sit down with the Board's Attorney to find out how we could begin to raise money for the project.  We had a very hard time getting to sit down with the Board's architects until recently,  We thought this would be an easier contact with Rich Little, the Board President, being an employee of Cannon Design, the school's architect.  We found it very difficult to believe that, when the Project was presented that the money allocated to fix the track was reduced and the number of seats in the stadium was reduced from its current size even though there was two full houses during the football season and lighting is going to be installed which will probably increase the attendance at the games.  Turf was requested and rejected by the Board.  This fall we have sent some of our teams to other facilities to play because of the comdition of our fields.  The current proposal has approximately $700,000 for sports facilities and the rest of the $47 million is for other things such as a new parking lot to replace the grass that was just planted as a result of the last project and to redo the entrance that was just done in the last project.
We are not against the academic portion of the proposal,  We want the schools to be the best in Western New York.  And they can be.  Like it or not, sports are a part of life for the students, parents and other spectators of Grand Island.  Did you know that some of our sports teams this fall had to be sent to play on other school's facilities because of the condition of our fields. Have you been to a sporting event lately?  Last year your teams won the Sports Supremacy award in the Niagara Frontier League (NFL).  This year already, 5 teams (Boy's and Girl's Soccer, Boy's and Girl's Cross Country and Girl's Tennis have won the NFL championships.)  Along with that, as of this writing, the Boy's and Girl's Volleyball Teams are progressing through the playoffs and the Football Team is playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium for the Class A Championship.  Don't our athletes deserve better than 1 1/2% of the capital project?  YOU DECIDE ON NOVEMBER 17th.
